Seeing “No location found” on iPhone is frustrating mainly because the message explains so little. It shows up in the Find My app, under a friend’s name in the People tab or under one of your devices, and it means only that a location couldn’t be determined at that moment. This guide explains the wording Apple uses, the likely reasons, and the steps for the cases where your iPhone location is not updating.

What does “No location found” mean on iPhone?

Apple’s iPhone User Guide uses the phrase in two places:

  • For a friend. In Find My, tap People and then a name. If your friend can be located, they appear on the map. If your friend can’t be located, you see “No location found” below their name.
  • For a device. In the Devices tab, if the device can’t be located, you see “No location found” below the device’s name. You can turn on Notify When Found under Notifications to get an alert when it is located.

Two related labels are easy to confuse with it. “Can see your location” under a person’s name means you share with them but aren’t following their location. And for devices, Apple’s troubleshooting page lists the statuses “Offline”, “No location available” and “Location Services Off”.

Why Find My shows no location

Apple gives these reasons for a device that appears offline, and they apply just as well to a friend’s iPhone, since a shared location comes from a device too:

  • The device is powered off or its battery has run out.
  • It isn’t connected to a known Wi‑Fi or data network. Airplane Mode has the same effect; see does Airplane Mode turn off location.
  • The device is in a region where Apple doesn’t offer the feature because of technical limitations or local law.

On the sharing side, Apple’s documentation points to these settings:

  • Location Services is off for Find My. Apple notes that if location sharing is set up and others still can’t see your location, you should check Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Find My.
  • Share My Location is off in the Me tab, which hides the location from everyone.
  • The location is shared from another device. Find My shares from one device, shown next to Sharing From. If that is an iPad left at home or a device that is switched off, the position is stale or missing.
  • Sharing was paused for you. The current iPhone User Guide describes Hide Location for a single person, which resumes automatically the next day.

Does “No location found” mean they stopped sharing?

You can’t tell from the message. According to Apple, when someone stops sharing with you, their location disappears from your Find My, Maps, Contacts and Messages apps, and you are not notified. A phone with a dead battery or no signal produces “No location found” as well. If it matters, the reliable way to find out is to ask the person. Sharing a location is their choice, and they may have a good reason for a break.

Fix it when your own iPhone shows no location

If friends tell you they see “No location found” for you, or your own iPhone doesn’t appear in Find My, go through Apple’s checks:

  1. Connection. Make sure the iPhone has a cellular or Wi‑Fi connection. Apple suggests turning Airplane Mode on and off, and restarting the device if that doesn’t help.
  2. Location Services. Go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, make sure the main switch is on, then tap Find My and allow access. Leave Precise Location on for Find My; Apple notes it is needed to see how far away your friends are.
  3. Sharing. In Find My, tap Me and check that Share My Location is on. If another device is listed next to Sharing From, tap Use This iPhone as My Location.
  4. Apple Account. In Settings, check that you are signed in, and with the same Apple Account on all your devices.
  5. Date and time. Go to Settings › General › Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.

iPhone location not updating in Maps and other apps

When the blue dot is stuck or missing, the cause is usually on the iPhone itself. Apple’s advice for Maps:

  1. In Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, make sure Location Services is on and Maps is set to While Using the App or Widgets.
  2. Set the date, time and time zone correctly, ideally with Set Automatically.
  3. Turn on cellular data or Wi‑Fi so that you have an active connection.
  4. Close the Maps app and reopen it, or restart the iPhone.

GPS accuracy depends on how many satellites the iPhone can see. Apple notes that finding all visible satellites can take several minutes, and that walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings and mountains can block the signal; the iPhone then falls back on Wi‑Fi and cellular networks. Stepping outside or near a window often fixes a location that won’t settle.

Find My location not updating for a friend

If a friend’s location is old or doesn’t move, there is little you can change on your iPhone. Check your own internet connection, close and reopen Find My, and turn on Precise Location for Find My if you want to see distances. Everything else is on their side: their iPhone needs a connection, Location Services turned on for Find My, and Share My Location enabled from the device they carry. You can send them the checklist above.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between “No location found” and “Location not available”?

Apple’s iPhone User Guide uses “No location found” for a friend or device that can’t be located. Its troubleshooting page lists “Offline”, “No location available” and “Location Services Off” as statuses for devices. All of them mean that no current position is available.

Does “No location found” mean I was blocked?

No conclusion can be drawn from the message. It appears when a device is off or has no connection, and Apple doesn’t notify you when someone stops sharing.

Why is my iPhone location not updating in Find My?

Most often there is no internet connection, Location Services is off for Find My, or your location is being shared from a different device. Check Sharing From in the Me tab.

How long does it take for a location to update?

Apple doesn’t publish an interval. A position appears once the device is online and can be located; GPS itself can need several minutes to become accurate.
